The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
