Users Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
