An extensive two-month cruise through Australia has been cancelled days after the tragic passing of an elderly woman who was left behind by the ship on a isolated island.

The elderly woman had been trekking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the group for a rest. The ship sailed away leaving her and returned several hours later after the ship staff realised the woman was missing.

A large-scale rescue mission discovered her remains the following day.

Authorities are examining the incident, together with police and the medical examiner.

Chief Executive of the voyage organizer stated that guests and personnel on the ship were informed that the remainder of the voyage had been cancelled due to the "sad loss and prior mechanical issues".

Through an announcement, he further stated that travelers would be provided a total repayment, and said the organization was working "to arrange the return journeys of the passengers via chartered flights".

Regulatory bodies also issued an updated statement, and said they had "provided a notice to the Commander" preventing any further travelers from getting on the ship.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the liner in the Australian city upon its coming back.

The ship initially left Cairns on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the expedition at the point of the 80-year-old's demise. The tropical location was the opening port on the itinerary.

Guests on the vessel - who typically pay substantial amounts of currency to participate in the cruise - were taken there for a shore visit with the option of walking or snorkelling.

The offspring of the victim said that her loved ones was "surprised and grieved that the ship left the island after an scheduled tour without my mother".

Via her announcement, she portrayed her mother as an "energetic 80-year-old" who was a member of a bushwalking organization.
